T.D. Jakes: The Mega-Preacher Takes on Hostile Work Environments

CBN.com A MESSAGE FOR THE MARKETPLACE
In his recent book, The 10 Commandments of Working in a Hostile Environment, Jakes shows readers how to use Christian principles in the workplace with faith as the key to happiness and productivity. He says that living by a few simple rules, people can rise above petty conflicts, turn obstacles into opportunities, and let God work in their lives every day -- even when they're coping with complaining co-workers or difficult bosses.

The key to personal peace and satisfaction in the workplace, says Jakes, is two-fold. First you must know that God has placed you where you are for a reason. Second, you must learn to work with God in your job. Learning to work with God will allow you to fulfill your true purpose and allow you to experience strength and not stress in the marketplace.

The ten commandments for working in a hostile environment are:

-- Know that you are anointed for the job or position you now hold
-- Don’t expect to be appreciated
-- Embrace opportunities for change
-- Do the job well while remembering the vision
-- Don’t let the environment get inside of you
-- Increase your capacity to work with difficult personalities
-- Where you are is not where you are going
-- Achieve optimal results with minimal confusion
-- Do not pledge allegiance to cliques and groups
-- Always keep your song near you

RENAISSANCE MAN
In 2001 the front page of TIME Magazine featured the question, “Is T.D. Jakes the next Billy Graham?” While his preaching style may not look much like that of Dr. Graham, his influence is every bit as broad. He has the ability to tailor his message to a variety of forms to reach today’s culture whether it be Christian conservatives, hip-hoppers, men or women, young and old. Jakes has been called a true 21st century renaissance man. He has a 28,000-member megachurch in Dallas, Texas. He’s a songwriter, a playwright, an actor, a pastor, a teacher, and an author.

Producing events like his new MegaFest, authoring numerous books and CDs, and producing a feature film has made Jakes, a 47-year-old non-denominational minister, one of the most powerful religious figures in America.

"I understand the importance of drama and storytelling," Jakes says. "I think they bring an important perspective to ministry, and for me this is harmonious with preaching. As preachers, we are engaged in storytelling every Sunday, sharing the story of the Good News of who Christ is, and dramatizing those words so people can experience them."

MEGAFEST CONFERENCES
In 2004 Jakes combined three segments of his ministry to form a megaevent appropriately called MegaFest, a four-day spiritual event. The 130,000 people who attended made it the second largest event to convene in Atlanta after the 1996 Summer Olympics.

"These meetings do for the soul what vitamins do for the rest of the body. They are a supplement,” Jakes says.

MegaFest combines two existing parts of Jakes’ ministry, Manpower and Woman, Thou Art Loosed. The third element focuses on teens and is called Youth3D. The conference idea was to give middle class African-American families a place to be entertained, uplifted, and fortified in a family friendly, welcoming environment. ManPower is an event that encourages men struggling in their daily walk to build strong marriages and take on responsibility in their community. Woman Thou Art Loosed is an enlightening seminar that tells the timeless message of God's way to hope. The MegaYouth Experience offers young people fun-filled, interactive workshops, seminars, and entertainment that will inspire them to appreciate and enjoy life!

MegaFest 2005 is scheduled for August 3 - 6 in Atlanta, Georgia.

USING THE WIDE SCREEN TO SET WOMEN FREE
Jakes’ film Woman, Thou Art Loosed was released on DVD last month. This film first had theatrical release in 2004 and was very well received by critics and audiences alike. The film had an ‘R’ rating due to content, but it is this very content dealing with real problems and a real solution that gave the film its appeal. The film was based on a novel written by Jakes. Woman Thou Art Loosed began as a simple Sunday school program more than ten years ago. It is now a best-selling book and Grammy-nominated CD as well.
