CBN.comTHE BIRTH OF THE STORY

The Nativity Story scheduled for release December 1, 2006, chronicles the arduous journey of Mary and Joseph (played by Oscar), a miraculous pregnancy and the history-defining birth of Jesus.  The film traces the perilous journey of the young couple who must travel from their only known home to find a birthplace for their unborn child.

Producer Marty Bowen challenged his screenwriter, Mike Rich, to pen a Biblical story.  Marty felt Mike’s personal faith and writing style would create a poignant and relatable story.  Rich was inspired at Christmas 2004 when he noticed a handful of magazine articles written about the Nativity.  It occurred to him that while he knew how the journey to Bethlehem ended, Rich had no idea how they got there, what kind of people they were and what challenges they faced.  Rich spent the majority of 2005 researching every aspect of the story, reading and rereading the Gospels of Matthew and Luke.

From the beginning of the screenplay’s creation, there was always a strong commitment to authenticity in the portrayal of the birth of Jesus.  Oscar says he grew up knowing the Nativity story and believes most people know the story to some extent but not who they were and what they went through.  “The love story aspect between Mary and Joseph is powerful,” he says.  “The whole thing about the nativity is about humility and love.”  He says while they were on the set, Oscar felt that each cast member knew they were taking part in a special production.
