MAKING A BAD SITUATION WORSE
The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown brilliantly mixes fact with fiction. The book and the major motion picture (which releases May 16, 2006 and stars Tom Hanks) portray a gripping conspiracy story that raises questions that even solid Christians will be challenged to answer. Josh says that the release of this movie may well be the beginning of one of the most controversial periods the Church has faced in years. Many church leaders believe that The DaVinci Code and upcoming movie have the potential to turn nominal believers into skeptics and cause many Christians to question their faith.
“If we equip our young people with solid answers about Christ’s deity and his Word, we can blunt the devastating effects The Da Vinci Code is bound to have,” says Josh.
In an unprecedented move, Josh recently released two books simultaneously. His book, The Da Vinci Code: A Quest for Answers, is aimed specifically at correcting distortions presented in the major motion picture.
“The problem is that Dan Brown’s book and the movie make a bad situation even worse,” says Josh. “The Christian faith has been under attack in this culture for decades and because most believers haven’t been equipped to know what they believe, the very foundation of Christianity within the Church has eroded. If trends continue, the next generation of the Church will not be rightfully called Christian.”
The Last Christian Generation offers a long-term plan to reclaim the next generation.
GLEANING FROM A DISTORTED WORLDVIEW
For many, Dan Brown’s intriguing characters and conspiracies have opened new doors, posed new questions, and launched them on an exhilarating quest for answers. Millions of people want to know more about the secret societies mentioned in The Da Vinci Code.
“They’re intrigued by the hints of mystery religions and evidences of ‘the sacred feminine’ in the history of Christianity,” says Josh. “They’re hungry for more details about Jesus, Mary Magdalene, their relationship and the Holy Grail.”
And they would love to uncover layers of intrigue and conspiracy beyond what is fabricated in Brown’s book. Josh’s book is a mere beginning for those who are searching for answers. The topics in A Quest for Answers can launch a lifelong journey of discovery. Like Brown’s book, the characters are fictional, but their discussions are based on real conversations. Some questions Josh says are being asked by those who have read Brown’s book are: Was Mary Magdalene really Jesus’ wife and mother of his child? Did the Church suppress the truth and fabricate Jesus’ claim to divinity? Is the Bible really accurate? Did Jesus really come back from the dead? In his second book, The Last Christian Generation, Josh provides a balanced blueprint to correct distorted views of God.
“What compelled me to get involved and the reason I released two books lies in the answers to two questions: How is it that a fictional novel can have such a mass influence in spreading seeds of doubt? And what must be done to equip a generation to discern fact from fiction,” says Josh.
Kids are ending up with a distorted view of Christianity that they have gleaned from the world around them.
“It’s not that they haven’t embraced a version of Christianity; it’s simply that the version they believe in is not built on the true foundation of what biblical Christianity is all about,” says Josh.
Those differences in belief make a world of difference in the lives they lead. Ultimately when our worldview becomes distorted, then how we view God, ourselves and others is affected also. There is hope, Josh says. He says we need to:
(1) Understand the distortions our young people have adopted,
(2) Reintroduce God to our young people for who He really is,
(3) Lead our young people to properly respond to God.
This is a golden opportunity for every church and family. “Our young people are in just the right place to grab hold of a discovery process that is real, relational and relevant to everyday life,” says Josh.
