Newsboys Live on The 700 Club

CBN.comRESTART
In 1985, the Newboys formed in Queensland, Australia then came to the states in 1987.  They signed with Star Song Communications and released 2 albums.  It wasn’t until 1992 when their album Not Ashamed gained the attention of singer-songwriter-producer Steve Taylor who began producing the band’s albums and writing many of the lyrics for their songs.  (Their 1995 Dove Award winning song, Shine, was recognized by CCM Magazine as one of the top 10 “100 Greatest Christian Songs.”) Since their formation, the Newsboys have consistently pushed the envelope, stretching the boundaries of what Christian music could be, and in the process, developed one of the most loyal followings of any band in the history of Christian music.

In 2009, with new lead singer Michael Tait (formely of dC Talk) the band was “reborn.”  “It sounds crazy coming from guys who have been doing this as long as we have, but it feels like as a band….we’re really just getting started,” says veteran member and drummer Duncan Phillips. (Other band members include Jody Davis - guitar, Jeff Frankestein - keys and Michael Tait - vocals.)

Since Christian music is the only genre that’s specifically known for songs with strong lyrical content, the Newsboys decided that part of their reinvention would mean getting back to basics.  The back-to-basics style is anything but basic when it comes to style, delivery and substance.  “I have not felt this way about anything I’ve been involved in musically since [dC Talks’s] ‘Jesus Freak,’” says Michael. “The pressure was there to make more of the same,” he says.  “But why not risk something? Why not restart it?” It took 2 years for the band to comb through songs and craft the absolute best, most cutting-edge music as possible.

GOD’S NOT DEAD
In 2012, one of the Newsboys’ songs, God’s Not Dead,  sold more than 300,000 copies and inspired Rice Broocks’ book of the same name.  On March 21, 2014 the movie God’s Not Dead, will hit select theaters around the country.  The movie includes a talented cast of actors including Kevin Sorbo (Soul Surfer, Hercules and Andromeda), etc. and features special appearances by the Newsboys and Duck Dynasty’s Willie and Korie Robertson.  The Newsboys continue to headline at Winter Jam 2014 and will kick off their We Believe Tour in April of this year.  Their Restart album debuted in September 2013 at number 1 on the Billboard Christian Album Charts and was declared “the perfect sound to reach a new generation of believers” by The Christian Post.
