Celebrating 40 Years of Charisma Magazine


CBN.comSMALL BEGINNINGS

When Stephen Strang started Charisma Magazine in 1975, he was a young newspaper journalist working for the Orlando Sentinel. He wanted to do something significant for God, and knew he had a talent for writing and networking. Stephen started Charisma as a small magazine for his church, Calvary Assembly in Orlando, Florida. He used the money he made to supplement his salary at the Sentinel. After several years, he took a leap of faith and left his job at the Sentinel to manage Charisma full time. The magazine soon began to flourish. Over time, Charisma began to cover Christian ministries such as  Pat Robertson, Kenneth Copeland, Marilyn Hickey, and TBN.

REACHING THE WORLD WITH INTEGRITY AND CHARISMA

In 1986 Charisma acquired Christian Life magazine, which included book publishing and another magazine. It was a move that Stephen says, “helped catapult us into the big leagues of evangelical publishing.” Then, in the 1990s and 2000s, Charisma grew even more.  As the Internet gained in popularity, Charisma developed a website, a news wire service and even televised news specials. The company held live conferences and events that featured the top Christian leaders, who were also being covered in the magazine.

Today, Charisma  is a multimedia source that is still growing. The media group reaches millions worldwide each month.  Charisma has taken advantage of the digital age by developing apps, rich-media-filled tablet editions, a robust website, social media platforms and various other online vehicles.

Charisma News is now its own brand that is housed under the Charisma Media umbrella. It offers 24/7 coverage of news that is important to believers. A key aspect of Charisma news is its decidedly Christian persepective on issues.

THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE

For Charisma’s 40th anniversary, Stephen and his staff decided to honor 40 people that Charisma has covered in the past who have “radically changed our world.”  Some of the notable people covered include Pat Robertson, Kathryn Kulman, Jack Hayford, Billy Graham, T.D. Jakes,  Oral Roberts, and Joyce Meyer.  Stephen says that although the company has been around for 40 years, it is just the beginning.  He says, “ As far as media companies go, we are small. What can we do? We can merely be a light! In the middle of a sunny day, a candle doesn't add much light. But where there is total darkness a single candle brings a lot of light. There is so much darkness that shining our light is more important than ever.” In many ways, Charisma Media has fulfilled  Stephen’s favorite scritpture, Ephesians 3:20- Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.
