Should Jim Tressel Have Retired?

– A few months ago the college football world was shocked when Ohio State Buckeyes’ head coach Jim Tressel confirmed that he had knowledge of players selling memorabilia for tattoos and money. Then a few days ago the news of his resignation surfaced. Was this really the right move for him and the school? For the past 10 years Tressel has been a pillar of character for college football. A man of faith and integrity, right?
Lets face it, he could have chosen to run his program any way he wanted, but he chose the route that was based on faith in God, good character, and outstanding academics. Sure, he was not completely honest about the situation but was it necessary for him to resign? Should he have to pay the price for the actions of his players?
Okay, so he knew about some mistakes his players made off the field. By NCAA rules he was suppose to report what was happening. But let’s be real, a coach for a football team is, in a lot of ways, a father figure for these guys. I’m sure he pondered what the right action should be in dealing with the players himself (Like a father would). I can’t help but to think about how God the father sees all of the mistakes we make and yet he chooses to have mercy and grace. Then once we repent, it’s forgotten, no questions asked. So I pose the question again, Did Jim Tressel make the right decision?
