The Nerdy Roberts

Ok, first let’s just admit it. Samuel Alito will not make the cover of GQ if you know what I mean. Doesn’t he look the guy in 10th grade math class with eight pens and a slide rule tucked in his front left pocket? He’s the smart, nerdy guy you remember from high school that is now all grown up and ready to be a Supreme Court Justice. He sure did look the part yesterday.

There was all this talk that it was going to be so hard, near impossible for the next nominee to do as well as John Roberts, now Chief Justice John Roberts. But I have to say, that performance Tuesday was almost as good-- maybe just as good. Alito was simply unflappable and he came across like a walking constitutional encyclopedia. No notes, just all from the top of his head just like Roberts. The only thing he was missing was the good tan and the GQ look.

As for the Democrats, this is starting to look like a losing proposition. The problem for Democrats is they do not have one issue they can stick on Alito. There is no one main theme where all Democrats can come together. Alito doesn’t sound out of the mainstream and public opinion polls seem to confirm that. The Democrats only hope going in was that Alito would fumble and  bumble his way through, but so far at least that hasn’t happened. Maybe that will change, but it’s doubtful.
