Ann Romney: 'Jesus Christ is Our Personal Savior'

February 15, 2007

Mitt Romney's Mormonism will be a topic of conversation as the 2008 campaign moves forward. Ann Romney, Mitt's wife, talked with Kate Snow of ABC News and had this to say about her Mormon faith:

"You really need to look to the heart and soul of someone, and see where they're coming from. And certainly if people look at our heart and soul, they will understand that we're in this race to make a difference, and to help, and that we share the values of most Americans, and um, yes, we have our faith, and you know, we do believe that Jesus Christ is our personal savior, so, you know, I think that a lot of people need to, to maybe get used to.

You can read the entire article here.

Let me say a few things. First of all, some Evangelicals will take issue with the fact that she said Jesus Christ is her personal savior. For Evangelicals, that's all it's about and the Bible is the only word of God. With Mormons, The Book of Mormon and the Bible are seen as a two book set and it's not SOLEY about a relationship with Christ. Isn't it interesting that people who don't believe in God think Evangelicals are a little weird. In turn, Evangelicals think Mormons are a little weird. It's like a cycle. The Romney's are going out of their way to say look, Mitt Romney would be Commander in Chief, not Theologian in Chief.

When will Mitt Romney deliver a JFK type speech on religion? His wife wants him to do it. Remember, JFK spoke out on this because he was Catholic and told Americans that there should not be a religious test for office like the Constitution states. In essence, JFk had to assure people that he would take his cues from the Founding Fathers not the Catholic Church. With Romney, if he moves up in the polls, he may be forced to say essentially the same thing; that the Mormon church will not dictate his actions as Presidency. He may have to go even further and address some of what he will call "misperceptions' about the Mormon faith.
