Newt Gingrich Seeks "God's Forgiveness"
March 8, 2007
Is Newt Gingrich paving the way to run in 2008? That question must be asked in light of the fact that he appears on James Dobson's Focus on the Family radio show today.
Though the two of them don't discuss 2008 presidential politics, clearly Gingrich is playing to a supportive audience. Newt has had some past marital problems so when he spoke to Dobson he said he had "gotten on my knees and sought God's forgiveness." You can listen to the broadcast here. Keep in mind though that the "forgiveness" part is on Friday's show, not today's.
It seems to me that this move makes sense on a number of levels. I'm trying to not sound skeptical but let's face it. If you've had "moral failings" in the past, then coming clean with James Dobson, on a show heard by millions is a smart way to do it. Christians believe in redemption. With Jesus, that's what it's all about right? Gingrich is speaking straight to social conservatives when he admits past failings. The thinking here is that they'll forgive him and then Gingrich can cast himself as the conservative alternative to Giuliani, Romney and McCain. I can just see Gingrich's September announcement speech now. He'll say something like this:
"As I've studied the issues and candidates for almost a year now, I have come to the conclusion that I must run. Grassroots conservatives want a true blue Republican that has fought with them on every conservative principle throughout the years. I'm that guy. So today, my fellow Americans, will you not join me in a new Contract with America."
