CBNNews.com - An aide to Virginia Senator Jim Webb has pleaded "not guilty" to gun charges, and released on his own recognizance.

Capitol police arrested Phillip Thompson Monday, for entering a Senate office building with a loaded semiautomatic, 9 mm-pistol and two magazines.

The aide said that Webb gave him the gun when he drove the senator to the airport, and he forgot he was carrying it.

Police discovered the weapon when the aide went through an X-ray machine.

Webb says that Thompson carried the gun into the building "completely inadvertently."

Thompson had been charged with carrying a gun without a license and possessing an unregistered firearm.
