Clinton Leads Romney by a Field Goal: 26-23
April 2, 2007
Mitt Romney made a statement. 23 million campaign bucks is extremely impressive. He's up there in Hillary Clinton land, trailing her by a field goal. It's still early, only the first quarter, but Romney has clearly showed he's not only a player but Hillary better watch out.
When I interviewed Romney last month, I asked him what his biggest challenge was.
His answer: Hillary Clinton. Romney has been saying since day one that he has his sights set on her.
His campaign team has always presented him as a strong frontrunner even though the polls have him in single digits.
Since he formed his exploratory committee, his press releases always had the feel of a serious presidential candidate. When the Senate would be debating a certain bill, Romney would chime in with what he thought about related amendments.
Romney has excellent organization on the ground and has been racking up the congressional endorsements not to mention key religious conservatives.
This campaign has been a machine from the get go and now they've shown the financial muscle as well. To use a football analogy, Romney is showing a smash mouth style that is moving the ball down the field rapidly with his sights set on the end zone.
