Brody File Readers on Romney
April 26, 2007
The mailbag is pretty full since I put up that story about Mitt Romney's position on the Hate Crimes bill. I brought up some quotes from the past as well where some people talked about his support for Hate Crimes legislation while running for Governor in 2002. You can read that Brody File entry here.
Anyhow, here is the feedback I'm getting:
"I have read many of your comments on Romney. To be upfront, I am not completely happy w/Romney, but I think he's the most electable of the current crop of nominatable republicans (Rudy can't win the nomination, but would do well in the general election). I have appreciated your balance on Romney. Everyone else I read either thinks he's the greatest thing since sliced bread, or they consistently blast him either out of their own anti-gay or anti-abortion, or dare I say anti-mormon extremism. Your columns on the other hand openly praise him when he's right on, and raise good questions about his past statements as balance. I am somewhat concerned about his past statements too, but am more and more convinced of his sincerity.
I'm a Romney supporter, and as such I dislike seeing anything negative printed about my candidate or past quotes that do not help his candidacy. Having said that, your bringing up past quotes is legitimate and the way that you portray candidates is balanced and fair. Unlike others in the media (or in McCain's camp) who bring up past quotes as a way to discredit Romney's embracing certain social conservative values, your message is one that the door is open for converts to the social conservative cause.
Past quotes on Romney are fine, if used in context. Quotes from others whose interpretations are biased, and seek to interpret Romney’s comments to their own position are inappropriate. If you want to know what a true believer in Christ believes, you ask the believer, not their detractors. In this case, many have misinterpreted or miscast Governor Romney’s positions on Gay/Lesbian Rights. He is an advocate for all Americans, seeking to eliminate discrimination of any kind. He also believes, as you have pointed out, that the laws as currently constituted sufficiently protect all Americans. He has never advocated civil unions for homosexuals, nor has he ever supported gay marriage.
We shouldn't concern ourselves so much with what someone(Romney) said in the past as what his current comments and pledges to us are. Keep in mind when you delve into Mitt Romney's political past that he had to represent a different constituency then. (The voters of the state of Massachusetts which by some estimates is 85% Democratic.) Besides that, anytime that you reprint some of those quotations or commentary like what was included at the end of your article, you only further the propaganda of the DNC and liberal media in how they try to portray Governor Romney as a less than true conservative.
