Democrats Debate: the Aftermath
April 26, 2007

The first presidential debate between Democratic candidates is over. Here are some of my rapid fire impressions from what transpired in South Carolina. (In no particular order of importance.)
Mike Gravel is a wild man. He was attacking everybody. He's like the Energizer Bunny with an attitude. I would pay admission to watch this guy.
Hillary Clinton was measured, calm, poised and handled herself very well. She's the front runner and looked the part tonight.
Barack Obama seemed extremely articulate, maybe a little nervous at first but warmed as the debate went on. His comments about using force against Iran was interesting, though I wonder if Cindy Sheehan is ready to picket his home.
Joe Biden kept his comments relatively brief which is a victory in and of itself. He was strong on foreign policy issues which is his strength.
Chris Dodd was okay. Nothing flashy. He needs to do more to move up.
Dennis Kucinich was Dennis Kucinich. I was ready to sing "Give Peace a Chance" after watching him.
John Edwards struggled a little bit on the question of who is the moral leader he looks up to? He basically couldn't answer it. It took him 10-15 seconds to think, then said, well, umm, my Lord I guess. Then my wife. Then my dad. Umm, try again next debate.
Bill Richardson showed his wealth of knowledge but not much flair. Kind of boring.
Bottom line: not many fireworks. Everybody attacked Bush. It'll get better the next time out.
