The Jesus Question

June 19, 2007

I know. I know. This is a sensitive subject, and my mailbox has been full ever since Mitt Romney delivered this line at the new Hampshire debate: "I believe in God, believe in the Bible, believe Jesus Christ is my savior."

Now comes the latest news between Romney and Sam Brownback. One of Brownback's Iowa Field Directors sent an e-mail around that's at the center of the controversy.

Here's part of the story from the Associated Press:

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said he accepted an apology Monday from GOP rival Sam Brownback for an e-mail disparaging his Mormon religion that a campaign aide sent to Iowa GOP leaders. Brownback, a Kansas senator, made a telephone call to the former Massachusetts governor, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

"He said that religious attacks don't have any place in politics and, of course, we agree on that," Romney said. "I told him that was not a big matter to me. If I can't stand the heat I shouldn't be in the kitchen."

The Brownback campaign earlier disclosed that an Iowa field director, Emma Nemecek, had been reprimanded for violating campaign policy. She had forwarded an interest group's June 6 e-mail that said in part "the LDS Jesus is not the same Jesus of the Christian faith."

Let's forget for a moment the fact that this e-mail was sent. Brownback has apologized and that's that. The larger issue is this idea in the e-mail that states, "The LDS Jesus is not the same Jesus of the Christian faith." Judging from the e-mails in my inbox, this very well may be the crux of the argument for certain Evangelicals. Yes, Romney may be right on their values. Yes, they may think he could be a great President. But watch his comments above to see how he raised this as an issue in New Hampshire.

As a Christian, that sounds great, right? But after watching the video, do you think his statement muddies the waters? I can see the e-mails now. Be kind. Take some advice from this little girl.
