The Brody File Reacts to the Democrats Debate
June 28,2007
So I had a choice tonight to either watch the NBA Draft or the Democrats debate at Howard University. I went with the game that brings it strong to the rim and can get downright nasty and physical. I chose the debate.
We didn't see major differences tonight between the Democratic candidates. The main reason was because of the topics: tax cuts for the rich, racism in America, AIDS, education, Katrina, etc. What was nice to see is some real dialogue about these important issues. There were some real good informational answers to ponder. No mudslinging at all.
I thought John Edwards had a strong night. His idea that he'd create a Katrina liaison official and hold that person responsible for progress was strong...and the crowd loved it. Edwards was also able to get right to his "Two America's" theme. He seemed very comfortable tonight. If you think about it, this forum was right up his alley. There was no way he could botch tonight…and he didn’t.
Once again, Hillary Clinton continued to show why she’s the front runner. She’s just so solid and shows no chinks in the armor. She had more strong moments again tonight. It's not often you get a standing ovation at a presidential debate but she did tonight when she said that if HIV was the leading cause of death for white women between 25 and 54 (rather than black women) then there would be a cure. That brought the house down. Also, her tough talk about the genocide in Darfur was particularly interesting. She talked about no fly zones and shooting down planes if need be. In each debate, she’s really been sounding very strong on national security and military matters.
Barack Obama was solid. He had a nice moment when he recognized the contributions of African American great Thurgood Marshall. That was important for him. By recognizing the "old guard" he shows that he "knows where he came from" and that's important with African American voters. Obama talking about how people want fairness was effective and went over well and I thought his talk about HIV was candid. The fact that the Church doesn’t like to talk about it had people nodding in agreement.
Joe Biden was able to take a question about race in America and turn it to talk about how the Supreme Court got it wrong today on the race issue. Then he was able to make the point that out of all the candidates he was the one who fought the hardest to keep John Roberts and Sam Alito off the bench. Biden gets bonus points for style.
On Chris Dodd, I'm sure he's saying real interesting stuff but when he speaks it's like he's on the Senate floor. Wake me up when it's over.
The Bill Richardson on the stump and the Bill Richardson in the debate hall are two totally different people. Stump Bill is energetic. Debate Bill is lifeless.
On Mike Gravel, he did what he does best. He ripped all the other candidates. I'm just glad he didn't throw any rocks. Did you see that video? It may be one of the most bizarre things you'll ever see. Watch it here.
