Romney's Latest Campaign Ad Makes Waves
July 16, 2007
The Brody File has been given Mitt Romney's latest campaign ad that's about to hit the airwaves in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. You can watch it here. It's called "Ocean."
Here's the transcript of it:
GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY: I'm deeply troubled about the culture that surrounds our kids today.
Following the Columbine shootings, Peggy Noonan described our world as "the ocean in which our children now swim."
She described a cesspool of violence, and sex, and drugs, and indolence, and perversions.
She said that the boys who did the shooting had "inhaled too deeply in the oceans in which they swam."
I'd like to see us clean up the water in which our kids are swimming.
I'd like to keep pornography from coming up on their computers.
I'd like to keep drugs off the streets.
I'd like to see less violence and sex on TV and in video games and in movies.
And if we get serious about this, we can actually do a great deal to clean up the water in which our kids and our grandkids are swimming.
I'm Mitt Romney and I approve this message.
Normally here at The Brody File we won't announce or go into detail about each candidate's campaign ad ... but this is different.
Romney has come under a lot of criticism from pro-family groups because they say he didn't do enough to curtail the Marriott Hotel chain from profiting off porn videos while he was a board member. Now he's out with a campaign ad that takes aim at the current culture war. Let me say a few things about the ad.
First of all, if you get sea sick, don't watch it. Just kidding, but there are so many shots of the ocean in it, I was waiting for the crew of Baywatch to save someone. But instead, it's Mitt Romney to the rescue. The campaign is clearly sending the message that if you want a wholesome, morally straight leader who cares deeply about kids and families then look no further. That shot at the end where Romney holds up the child is priceless.
Let's be real here. Mitt Romney has the family and the scandal-free resume to pull it off. You won't find Romney's name next to David Vitter's on the Madame's list. Campaign ads like this can distinguish him from the field with social conservatives. This seems to be a step in the right direction.
