CBNNews.com - George Otis, Sr., the man who pioneered Middle East television and influenced Christians around the world, passed away this past weekend. He was 90 years old.

Otis had been the general manager for Learjet before coming to Christ. But he was perhaps best known for his deep love and commitment to the Middle East.

Otis started The Voice of Hope Radio Network in southern Lebanon bringing hope to Israelis and Lebanese alike during a time of brutal war.

"We believed that where there was the maximum trouble, where there is maximum abandonment by the rest of the Christian world, is a place that we needed to come in to," Otis once said.

He went on to found what would eventually become Middle East Television.

In the early 1980s, Otis handed over the station to CBN to pick up the mantle of broadcasting Christian television to the land of the Bible.

Throughout his life, his energetic enthusiasm for the Gospel helped him touch the lives of many. It also paved the way for Christian broadcasting in the Middle East.

Today, The Voice of Hope Radio Network can be heard in every continent in the world. Hundreds of thousands have come to Christ through the ministry of high adventure.

"When the Lord made George Otis he threw away the mold," CBN Founder Pat Robertson said. "He was quite a man who had irrepressible joy and enthusiasm.  He will be remembered fondly for his wonderful work with Voice of Hope Ministries and he will be greatly missed."
