Is Decisive Victory Near in Iraq?
September 4, 2007
- "Al Qaeda “has suffered a catastrophic strategic defeat and a humiliation - rejected by its own kind - that will resound in the Muslim world. “
- The “hotbed of insurgency, Anbar Province, has largely come over to our side.”
- "(T)he surge strategy is bringing peaceful conditions to ever more Iraqi neighborhoods - and street-level Iraqis are grateful. They don't want us to leave. “
He also quotes Lt. Col. Doug Ollivant, the 1st Cavalry Division's G-5 Plans officer, who says that "our counterinsurgency fight is largely won."
With many predicting a Democratic sweep next November, what if the news from Iraq gets even better? Many Republicans candidates will still run against the Iraq war, but don’t be surprised if we also see GOP election ads featuring
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s pronouncement in April that Iraq “is lost.”
Observing big (read
liberal) media behavior is often like watching a lab rat perform for treats, and the big media rat is clearly addicted to negative Iraq news.
Weeks ago, when the body counts began to plummet,
The Associated Press and the major papers began to transition their coverage to how screwed up Iraq is
politically (And it
is screwed up politically.)
But they can’t wean themselves from negativity about Iraq in part because they’re still too ashamed of their initial support (albeit equivocal and relative) for the invasion. U.S. big media felt "outted" by the principled European press as too servile and gullible toward the Bush Administration, which is considered by the European elites to be the real axis of evil.
