Mitt Romney Goes "Traditional"
September 18, 2007
Mitt Romney has a new radio ad airing tomorrow in Iowa. It’s called “Traditional” and focuses in on Romney’s view that there needs to be a Federal Marriage Amendment. He rolls the Iowa Judge ruling against traditional marriage into the spot. You can listen
here. I want to highlight a portion of the transcript below:
ANNOUNCER: Mitt Romney is supporting a Federal Marriage Amendment to the Constitution."
GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY: "Not all Republican candidates for president agree, but defending marriage is the right thing to do."
The key line is when Romney says, “Not all Republican candidates for president agree”.
This is the way Romney will try and differentiate himself from his three main rivals. Giuliani and McCain are flat out not for a federal marriage amendment. Fred Thompson is for one but it stops short of a one size fits all approach. He would leave the marriage question ultimately up to the state legislature. This is significant for the Romney campaign. This is one issue where he can make hay.
The hope within the Romney campaign is that the flip flop label talk will have run its course by January 2008 and instead, the narrative will be about the ‘social conservative Romney”. It’s what the campaign has been marching towards since day one. He leads in Iowa and New Hampshire. It just may be working.
