Video: Giuliani Thinks He's the Only Republican Candidate That Can Win California

September 28, 2007

Rudy Giuliani
Watch Low Band

Calling himself the "50-state candidate," Rudy Giuliani made clear in my interview with him in Santa Barbara that he is really the only Republican that can win California in the General Election. Watch it above, read it below.

Rudy Giuliani: We are going to have a real tough job both winning the presidency and winning back the Congress a year from now. The more fighting we do with each other the more difficult it's going to be.

And I just ask Republicans to consider the fact that if we want to win we'll need a 50-state candidate. And I'm a 50-state candidate. My opponents are 30-sate candidates or 35-state candidates - meaning they'll have to do what some of the Republicans in the past have done which is write off New York and California and New Jersey and Connecticut, Washington and Oregon. I can run in all those states. It doesn't mean that I can win in all those states, but I can run in all those states, and if you want to get Congress back we're going to need a 50-state candidate.

David Brody: You don't think a Thompson or Romney can win in a California in a general election?

Giuliani: Well, the only reason I say that is every poll that's been taken in the last seven or eight months indicates that, I'm not talking about any one particular Republican.

Exclusive Interview: Giuliani in California

The other Republicans lose in those states by more than 20 percent. And in those states some of them I win, some of them I'm very close. Just a poll in New Jersey had me beating Hillary by four or five percent. Everybody else loses to Hillary by 15 percent, so those are the states that I can put in play.

And in addition to winning the presidency, those are the states where we lost our members of Congress. Those are the places we're going to have to make some gains if we want to take Congress back. And boy the direction of this country if we have a Hillary Clinton and a Democratic Congress - from my point-of-view it is a very, very - that would be a very negative direction both with regard to dealing with terrorism and this large government that she's going to develop including socialized medicine.
