What Israelis Think about Dividing Jerusalem
October 9, 2007
The Olmert government seems serious about dividing Jerusalem. While the Prime Minister's office denies it, Haim Ramon, his vice premier and one of the chief Israeli negotiators with the Palestinian Authority, has been quite open about raising the idea of dividing the city.
It's ironic that Ehud Olmert, the former mayor of Jerusalem, would allow his government to consider something he said numerous times as mayor would never happen.
These developments about the division of Jerusalem all come prior to a major diplomatic summit next month in the U.S. on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
But what do Israelis think about dividing Jerusalem? A recent poll reported that 63 percent of Israelis do not want to divide the city.
We tested some of that Israeli opinion out on the streets today. We went to Ben Yehuda Street, one of Jerusalem's major pedestrian areas, and talked to some Israelis about this controversial issue.
