CBNNews.com - The popular book and movie series about witchcraft that has already drawn much opposition from Christians will likely elicit more criticism.
One of the main male characters, a master wizard and headmaster of the book's witchcraft school, known as Albus Dumbledore, was declared by author J.K. Rowling to be gay.
She presented this information after reading excerpts from her last book "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" before a packed crowd at Carnegie Hall.
When a young fan asked Rowling if Dumbledore ever finds "true love," she responded, "Dumbledore is gay."
After divulging the unexpected news, Rowling continued on that Dumbledore was infatuated with a rival wizard, who is also a male.
Then Rowling offered her opinion on relationships.
"Falling in love can blind us to an extent," she said before adding that the gay headmaster was "horribly, terribly let down."
She then noted that Dumbledore's love was his "great tragedy," and then chuckled, "Oh my god, the Fan Fiction."
Fan Fiction is an Internet site where fans can speculate, converse and write on books, movies, shows, etc.
One branch of the site is dedicated to Harry Potter, and explicit scenes with Dumbledore already appear there.
Rowling also boasts that her books are a "prolonged argument for tolerance," and she encouraged Harry Potter fans to "question authority."
After acknowledging that not everyone likes her books, Rowling said that declaration about Dumbledore's sexuality will give critics another reason to dislike them.
Christian groups are the opposition about which Rowling was most likely speaking, who argue that her books promote witchcraft.
