John Edwards Tells Brody File He's the Candidate That Can Win in the South
November 27, 2007
Monday in Nashua, New Hampshire I sat down with presidential candidate John Edwards. We met in a tiny little room right next to where he was about to do a town hall meeting. Video of the interview will be available later today. The full piece for television will air the week of December 3.
The book on Hillary is that she is polarizing and Edwards keeps saying he's more electable especially in the south. His reasoning is below:
Edwards: I'm the only democrat who has actually won in a red state. I was elected against an incumbent Republican backed by the Jesse Helms political machine, a very powerful, very effective machine.
I grew up in small town rural America. What Democrats always need to do to be successful is we have to be competitative in those places. When I go to rural areas whether it be in iowa, new Hampshire, Ohio, North Carolina, across the South - when people hear me talk it sounds very familiar to them - I don't just mean the accent - I do talk like this, but beyond the accent, I think they sense that I understand what their lives are about.
I mentioned this a few minutes ago, in my life, when I was growing up, was built around going to Friday night high school football games, church on Sunday morning, church on Sunday night, Wednesday night church, church outings - that's the way I grew up, so I understand that way of life, and I understand what it means to ordinary Americans who are living every single day. Nobody has to explain this to me. I don't have to read it in a book, and I think that people feel, in those parts of the country that I'm a presidential candidate who does understand their lives, so I think I can go there, campaign and be competitive.
