John Edwards Tells Brody File That He Can Win South Carolina
November 27, 2007
Monday in Nashua, New Hampshire I sat down with presidential candidate John Edwards. We met in a tiny little room right next to where he was about to do a town hall meeting. The full piece for television will air the week of December 3.
While Edwards says he can win in the south he trails badly in South Carolina to Clinton and Obama. What's going on? Read Edwards explanation below..
Brody: What about South Carolina, though, because you're not leading down there and that would be a place you think you could do pretty well.
Edwards: I won the South Carolina primary in 2004, and I was way behind in the polls at this stage in 2004. I think all that has to happen in South Carolina is voters there need to be reminded where I'm from -- that I was born there. That I understand the closing of plants, the loss of jobs, the rural economy. Those are all things that I grew up with, and I understand them in great and intimate detail because I have lived them, and I've seen what it's like with my own family.
I've seen the deterioration of the economy in a lot of parts of the country - like South Carolina and North Carolina. And that's what happened last time. Last time, I was way behind at this stage and the closer and closer we got to the primary, people started to focus, get past the glitz and the glamour of some of the candidates and actually focused on who understand their lives. I won South Carolina going away in 2004.
