CBNNews.com - JERUSALEM, Israel - An exciting discovery by prominent Hebrew University archaeologist Dr. Eilat Mazar dates to Nehemiah's era as governor of Jerusalem.

Antiquities from the excavation of the City of David, just outside the Old City's Dung Gate across from the Mount of Olives, had been dated to the Hasmonean period.

But newly unearthed pottery shards, discovered beneath a tower at the site, pre-date the Hasmonean era to the 5th century B.C.

This most recent discovery confirms Dr. Mazar's hypothesis that they're at the site of King David's palace.

Though Israeli archaeologists have to deal with Muslim opposition to excavations near the disputed Temple Mount, Dr. Mazar plans to continue excavating the site.
