Brody File Readers Reaction to Huckabee

December 11, 2007

I’m getting quite a few emails from readers in regards to Mike Huckabee. Some comments are about Huckabee’s statements from the past on AIDS and homosexuality. Others are more random. Just thought you might want to see what is coming in to The Brody File:
From Jerry:
God calls homosexuality, lying, cheating, etc a sin.  Huckabee is just stating a fact.  I admire him for stating the truth without compromise.
From Kellie:
I admire him for not backing down. Someone has to tell them the truth. If we don't then their blood is on our hands. No it's not popular, but what Jesus said was not either. I take my hat off to him. Stay strong Brother Mike.

From Laurie:

I'm glad Mike is saying that homosexuality is a sin because it is. I am a RN and back in 1992 it was well known that HIV/AIDS was not spread by casual contact and there was NO NEED to isolate carriers.  Universal precautions were practiced in medical settings and the public was educated to abstain or use precautions during "relations". Huck was just plain ignorant and it showed.  He is ignorant about many things, I see.  The list is very long so I won't go into it all. I am a Conservative Christian.  I think MH would make a better pastor than a president.
From Ben:
Huckabee isn't Anti-Mormon from what I can tell, but I still don't like the way that he's using the religion card.  If he wanted to put "religious leader" on his commercials that'd be fine.  And Romney could put the same.  But as is, I worry about Huckabee.  And I hope that I'm not coming off as a pain in the  rear, anti-Huckster.  I've thought a lot about this. I've been talking to my roommate, and we're wondering why Huckabee is using religion to contrast with Romney: that isn't fair, and Huckabee ought to know that.  He has no right to claim that he is a "Christian leader" and then claim that "whether or not Mormons are Christians is not my debate."  He's using it to his advantage, and then running away from the question.  He needs to address how he feels if he's going to use it to profit him, which he clearly has.  The least he could do is say that he'll stay out of whether or not Mormonism is Christian, but at least declare that it isn't a cult, that Mormons are good people, and that most of the stuff published about them is offensive.  Certainly there are anti-Baptists out there too.  He would probably take my vote away from Romney if he came out and did that: it's show that he would do what is right.  Either stay out of the religious debate, or get into it.  But don't waffle.
From John:
Huckabee's appeal to the Christian right reinforces a profound misunderstanding of what it takes to lead the people - all of the people. Instead of appealing to values, which are universal (or should be), he's claiming (in essence), that he is God's favorite candidate. The sad thing is that some people are buying into that divisive message. He is the ultimate one-issue candidate. Giuliani has got to be tickled pink at the kind of rhetoric Huckabee is spilling out right now. He knows that he doesn't stand a chance against Mitt on values, but if voters see Huckabee as making up for what he lacks, he can join forces with Huckabee and get the value voters to ignore his less savory attributes. The irony is that this can only be a short lived fantasy - when was the last time that a vice-president ever shaped domestic social policy (or had a commanding say in anything else)? Social conservative voters will get cheated, because Giuliani isn't the type to share power, let alone the limelight.
