CBNNews.com - JERUSALEM, Israel - Citing "broad implications," the government rejected a petition filed with the High Court by Sderot residents to finance fortification of 800 homes against rocket and mortar attacks.
According to the State, Israeli law does not obligate the government to fortify residential homes in the rocket-battered city.
"[Fortifying homes] is not limited to this singular context and is closely linked to various other matters that will have ramifications on Israel's security, image and deterrent capabilities," the government stated in its response.
"It affects the ability of residents in the area of conflict to remain steadfast in the face of attacks, as well as various budgetary repercussions," the statement read.
The document asked the court to reject the residents' petition because in any case, fortifying homes falls under the government's jurisdiction, not the court's.
Residents of Sderot and adjoining communities live under a daily threat of Kassam rocket and mortar shell attacks.
Public Security Avi Dichter predicted recently that many more Israelis will soon be living with the threat of rocket attacks due to Hamas' acquisition of longer-range rockets that can carry bigger payloads.
