Romney in 2005: Huckabee Would Make a "Fine President"

December 12, 2007

Check this out. Mike Huckabee is looking for all the endorsements he can get. Well, in August of 2005, look what Mitt Romney had to say about Mike Huckabee.

This was at the Governor's mansion in Little Rock when both Huckabee and Romney were Governors. They were meeting about healthcare and Romney was asked about his future as a presidential candidate:

"Who knows what the future will hold? Most likely, we'll all stay as governors or find other offices, but we need to make sure that we have a strong person who can take the baton from President Bush, and Gov. Huckabee is certainly one of those individuals. He'd make a fine president."

I'm sorry. When I saw that, I just laughed out loud. I guess if you're a Romney fan it's not all that funny but the statement is so interesting considering what's going on in Iowa. That line is red meat for the next Huckabee ad. Oh, my!!!

I'm sure the Romney camp can spin themselves out of that line relatively easily by saying that Romney hadn't done an exhaustive look at Huckabee's record. But still. He said it. Does he now take it back? If he does, is he flip flopping? Does he still think Mike Huckabee would make a fine President? I think the downside to this for Romney is it not only gives Mike Huckabee potential campaign ad material but it also gives the jovial Huckabee a great one liner to go around telling people across the country.
