CBNNews.com - Israel achieved a milestone Tuesday when the U.N. adopted a resolution on agriculture proposed by the Jewish state.

With 118 in favor and 29 abstentions, the resolution to aid developing countries with agricultural technologies calls for the participation of U.N. member nations.

For many years, Israel has helped developing countries, especially in arid regions, with agricultural techniques that have proven successful with Israeli farmers.

Israel's U.N. Ambassador Speaks Out
"For Israel, this is a very dramatic development and an historic day at the U.N.," said Danny Gillerman, Israel's U.N. ambassador. "This makes Israel a much more normal and acceptable member of the U.N.," he said.

"One of our main aims is to not be a one-issue country and to bring awareness of Israel's excellence to the world," Gillerman said.

Not surprisingly, most of the 29 abstentions were from Arab countries. But South Africa's abstention was not expected.

"South Africa is a big disappointment," said Israel's ambassador. "They sent out the wrong message," he said.

"Presuming to be a leader of the African continent and as a member of the [U.N.] Security Council, for them to abstain on a resolution that Africa will be a main beneficiary of is shameful," Gillerman said.
