Huckabee's Warm Christmas Ad
December 17, 2007
Have you seen Mike Huckabee's latest campaign ad? Watch it here. The text is below.
"Are you about worn out of all the television commercials you've been seeing? Mostly about politics. I don't blame you. At this time of year, sometimes it's nice to pull aside from all of that and just remember that what really matters is the celebration of the birth of Christ and being with our family and our friends. I hope that you and your family have a magnificent Christmas season. And on behalf of all of us, God bless and Merry Christmas. I'm Mike Huckabee and I approve this message."
I can already hear it now, "Pander alert! Pander alert! There here goes again with that 'Christian leader' stuff." Hold on a minute. If this was airing only in Iowa, then sure, you may have a point, but he's airing it in New Hampshire too, where the last time I checked, the Evangelical equation wasn't as nearly as high as Iowa.
Either way, the ad comes across as warm and sincere. I mean he had the whole Christmas theme going on: the red sweater, the "birth of Christ" line, a Christmas tree, and the music in the background. I'm surprised he wasn't holding a cross.
Seriously though, what we're seeing here is that Mike Huckabee seems to be doing exactly the opposite of what Romney is doing. Romney is going negative by pointing out Huckabee's record. Huckabee won't do a negative ad. at least not yet. The campaign tells me that going negative is ultimately going to hurt Romney. Will Huckabee's ad strategy work?
