Israel Videos Egypt Aiding Terrorists

CBNNews.com - Israel is forwarding video footage to the U.S. Congress of Egyptian border policemen aiding Palestinian terrorists at Egypt's border with the Gaza Strip.
Israeli officials are hoping the videotaped evidence will convince senior U.S. legislators to penalize Egypt by curbing military aid.
On Sunday, Congress passed a foreign aid bill withholding $100 million of the $1.3 billion allocated to Egypt. But the bill includes a disclaimer waiving the restriction if U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice believes holding back the aid would threaten U.S. national security.
According to
The Jerusalem Post, this would be the first time military aid to Egypt, which started after the July 2000 Camp David Accords, would be withheld.
Israel, which would like to see more U.S. pressure on Egypt to prevent weapons smuggling into Gaza, hopes senior congressmen will be spurred to action after viewing the videotaped evidence.
Meanwhile, Jerusalem Post Palestinian Affairs correspondent Khaled Abu Toameh said Egypt has an interest in appeasing Hamas and would prefer to see weapons end up in Gaza instead of Cairo.
According to Toameh, a byproduct of Egypt's crackdown on terror cells has caused some terrorists to flee to Gaza, where Hamas welcomed them into training camps built on the ruins of Israeli communities destroyed in August 2005.
Egypt fears these terrorists will return one day to overthrow its government.
"The Egyptians already have enough problems, especially with the Muslim Brotherhood and al-Qaeda," one official said, adding that these terror cells "pose a major threat" to President Mubarak's rule.
At some future date, al-Qaeda's "sleeping" cells in Sinai will be dispatched against Egyptian targets.
"These terrorist groups have tons of explosives, which are capable of turning Sinai into hell," the official said.
"Both al-Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood are cooperating with Hamas in the smuggling of weapons and explosives into the Gaza Strip," he said.
"In addition, some Bedouin tribes and Palestinians living in Sinai are also involved. Mubarak should know that the weapons being used today against Fatah will be used tomorrow against his own regime," he said.
