South Africa Votes
December 18, 2007
The polls are closed in South Africa now. The votes are being counted. We should know soon who the next leader will be of South Africa's ruling African National Congress. And who wins this election, will probably determine who will be the next President of SA in 2009.
It is the ultimate showdown between SA's current President Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma (who, by the way, was once fired becaues of alleged corruption). Earlier this month I talked about the vote buying that was going on in this election. Sounds like its been a pretty dirty race...but then again, many elections around the world-including the U.S.-are often tainted with problems.
There's a good article in the Washington Post today about the election. There's also another good article called Polokwane for Dummies that puts the election in to perspective and easily explains the current situation.
No matter who wins, there are several important issues that the winner will have to tackle. Stay tuned for more updates...
