CBNNews.com - JERUSALEM, Israel - Some 6.5 tons of potassium nitrate, used to manufacture explosives, were discovered in bags of sugar supplied by the European Union.
In a weekend announcement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet (General Security Agency) said the hidden cache was uncovered at a checkpoint in the West Bank (Judea and Samaria) several weeks ago.
European Union officials in Jerusalem declined comment on the incident.
Marked as EU aid for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, the bags of sugar were being transported in a truck with Palestinian Authority tags.
"Potassium nitrate is a banned substance in the Gaza Strip and the Judea and Samaria region due to its use by terrorists for the manufacturing of explosives and Kassam rockets," read an IDF statement.
"This is another example of how the terror organizations exploit the humanitarian aid delivered to the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip, with Israel's approval," it said.
The European Union provides more humanitarian aid to Gaza than any other single source.
