Update on Kenya Violence

January 2, 2008

I was finally able to get through to someone in Nairobi. The neighbor of a friend.  She asks everyone to pray for the peace of Kenya.

Things are tense in the nation's capital. And she asks everyone to pray that things cool down before they "get out of hand."  (Which begs the question...aren't things already out of hand?)

A few e-mails regarding the violence in Kenya have already come in. I would love to hear what you have to say about the situation there. Please e-mail me your comments.

Jimmy writes....

"I am sorry to see what is happening in Kenya. I have a friend whose Mom and some family is still living there. I prayed for her and her family, that they are safe, as well as the people of Kenya. It is so disheartening seeing this. You get depressed, we must keep moving forward, Keeping our eyes on Jesus, asking for mercy and perseverance."

Bongi from Zimbabwe writes...

"The situation in Kenya is both alarming and concerning because Kenya is viewed as one of the stable countries on the continent. What concerns me the most are the motivations for the attacks, which are along tribal lines. I agree that this situation is a stark reminder of Rwanda, and the sad part is that innocent people are going to get killed....

As an African, my experience has taught me that government's do rig elections. The only problem is how will Kenyans solve that problem, while protecting their security and well being, which in my opinion is under siege.

Also, at the moment the government does not have credibility and the opposition seems to think that all the violence will benefit them, because it brings awareness to the problem.

In the meantime, sadly, innocent people will be killed. I hope the visit of the Organization of African Unity representative today will at least help in putting together a game-plan, for the resolution on this mayhem. Even as I write this, part of me does not believe this will happen.

I think the best solution is for us to pray for God's hand to take control in Kenya and for protection for innocent people who risk losing their lives in days to come. As the Bible says, when we do not know how to pray, we should ask the Holy Spirit and He is faithful ALL the time."

By the way, I am working on an analysis article on the Horn of Africa that should hopefully be posted with in the next 24 hours.  Keep checking back to Africa Matters through out the day for updates on this situation.
