Uganda's Anglicans Threaten to Secede from Global Church

KAMPALA, Uganda - Uganda's Anglican church is threatening to secede from the 77-million-member Anglican Communion unless U.S. clergy condemn homosexuality.

Monday's announcement is the latest salvo in a fierce dispute about homosexuality that has overtaken the global fellowship of Anglican churches since its U.S. wing, the Episcopal Church, consecrated its first openly gay bishop in 2003.

A Church of Uganda spokesman warned, "If they don't change, and continue to support homosexual practices, our relationship with them will be completely broken." He added, "We shall remain Christians, but not in the same Anglican Communion."

About one-eighth of the world's Anglicans are in the Church of Uganda.
