CBNNews.com - Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice is calling for an immediate cease fire in Sudan's Darfur region, and the quick deployment of U.N. peacekeepers.
Rice says the U.S. cannot "sit still" while innocent men, women and children are killed.
More than 200,000 people have died in Darfur since 2003 and more than 2.5 million are homeless.
Arab militiamen called "janjaweed" have been blamed for killing entire families, gang rapes and looting
Meanwhile, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, R-Calif., signed a bill to stop two state retirement systems from investing in companies that do business in Sudan.
Actors George Clooney and Don Cheadle pushed for the legislation and joined the governor for the signing.
"I am signing two bills that will send very clear message that California will not tolerate murder and genocide," Schwarzenegger said.
"With the stoke of pen, Governor Schwarzenegger sets an example for those who may be teetering on the edge of indecision," Cheadle said. "Today, the state of California moves to the list of standers instead of by-standers. And stakes its place in history as being on the right side of a very wrong conflict."
The governor hopes the legislation will force the Sudanese government to do more to end the crisis in Darfur.
