CBNNews.com - JERUSALEM, Israel - During a tour of the OC Central Command's Jerusalem headquarters Tuesday, Major General Gadi Shamni told Israeli President Shimon Peres that Hamas is working toward a West Bank takeover.

"Without the massive IDF [Israel Defense Forces] presence in the West Bank [Judea and Samaria], Hamas would take over the institutions and apparatuses of the Palestinian Authority [PA] within days," the OC (commanding officier) told the president.

"Although there are no rocket attacks emanating from the West Bank, we've found rockets produced there and this tells us there are [rocket manufacturing] labs in the region," he said, showing Peres a Kassam rocket and launcher confiscated by the IDF in Nablus (biblical Shechem).

According to Shamni, while the PA government is making an effort to keep order in the streets, it is not attempting to interfere with terrorist activities in Judea or Samaria.

But IDF counter-terror operations, in conjunction with the Shin Bet (General Security Agency) and the Israel Police, have successfully thwarted most of the attacks emanating from PA-controlled areas.

"For the first time in a decade, the IDF, intelligence services and the police have managed to almost completely prevent terror attacks on the home front," the general said.
