Jewish, Christian Leaders Welcome Saudi King's Interfaith Proposal

NEW YORK - Some Jewish and Christian leaders have reacted warmly to Saudi King Abdullah's proposal that they meet with Islamic leaders for interfaith talks.
Specifics of the initiative, including whether Israelis could take part, remain unclear.
But Abdullah says Saudi Arabia's top clerics have given him a green light -- crucial in a society that bans non-Muslim religious services.
The king's call was described as a "dramatic and important development" by Rabbi Eric Yoffie, president of the Union for Reform Judaism, the largest branch of American Judaism.
The Reverend James Loughran, director of the Catholic Graymoor Ecumenical & Interreligious Institute, also welcomed the proposal, saying he was "elated."
