Catholic Vote Critical for Democrats in Pennsylvania
Associated Press
March 27, 2008
SCRANTON, Pa. - Roman Catholics could be the key voting bloc in this month's Pennsylvania Democratic primary. Pennsylvania has an estimated 3.8 million Catholics, or just over 30 percent of the state's population, and the percentage among Democrats is estimated to be slightly higher.
In early primary states, exit polls show Hillary Clinton with a 61-35 percent edge over Barack Obama among Catholic voters. A recent Quinnipiac University poll shows her leading Obama 70-24 percent among Pennsylvania Catholics.
Obama plans small meetings with Catholic voters and intends to communicate through e-mails and phone banks. But being pro-choice on abortion makes both Obama and Clinton unwelcome in many Catholic venues.
Clinton is a Methodist and Obama is a member of the United Church of Christ.
