Obama Says Sound Bites Don't Tell Story of His Pastor

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama says people shouldn't pay so much attention to his former pastor's "stupid" comments.

Obama has previously condemned Reverend Jeremiah Wright's remarks cursing America for its reatment of minorities and accusing the U.S. government of inventing AIDS to destroy black people. But Obama used a question about religion at a town hall forum in North Carolina to further address the continuing controversy.

Obama said his former pastor "was preaching three sermons at least a week for 30 years and it got boiled down" to a short sound clip that's been played repeatedly.

Obama said his Chicago church was like most others on any given Sunday, with people "praising Jesus" and the pastor preaching a sermon "connecting Scripture to our daily lives."
