CBNNews.com - GLOUCESTER CITY, N.J. - Police pursued a man they believed to be armed onto a major Philadelphia-area bridge on Thursday, blocking traffic during the evening rush hour in a three-hour standoff.
The impasse ended with the man in custody and a woman and child also inside the sport-utility vehicle unharmed, authorities said. A toy gun and baseball bat were recovered from the SUV, said State Police Sgt. Steven Jones.
Shortly before the standoff ended, an armored police vehicle pulled up facing the SUV, and SWAT officers were positioned behind it. The three people then left the vehicle and walked a few feet behind it.
After a short time, both the man and the woman lay on the ground, and officers moved in.
Capt. Al Della Fave of the New Jersey State Police said that troopers tried to pull the vehicle over for speeding but that the driver failed to stop.
The bridge carries Interstate 76 over the Delaware River between south Philadelphia and Gloucester City, N.J. The bridge was shut down at about 4:30 p.m.
