CBNNews.com - JERUSALEM, Israel - On the same day that Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops dismantled a checkpoint near the Jewish community of Kochav Hashahar in Samaria, an Arab university student attacked two Israelis at a hitchhiking post 10 miles away.

"The checkpoints have proven themselves and without real daily control of the territory, there is no way to conduct an effective battle against terrorism," Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said at the beginning of January.

Less than three months later, at the behest of U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, representing the Bush administration, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak ordered 50 checkpoints to be dismantled. In a matter of hours, an attack took place.

Most Israelis hold no illusions as to what the dismantling of checkpoints portends.

IDF troops manning the checkpoints frequently confiscate knives, explosive material and concealed weapons from Arabs hailing from areas under the control of the Palestinian Authority (PA).

Tuesday's dismantling of the Rimonim checkpoint, which monitors traffic between Ramallah and Jericho, coupled with the removal of 50 dirt roadblocks, leave Israelis vulnerable once again to Palestinians who believe that terror attacks are legitimate acts of "resistance" against the Zionist "occupiers."

"Barak is bartering the lives of Israeli citizens for American approbation, not with any expectations of peace with the Palestinians, only for the appeasement of Rice," one Israeli said.
