Security Council Committed to Res. 1701

CBNNews.com - On Tuesday, the United Nations Security Council restated its commitment to Resolution 1701, issued with the UN-brokered cease-fire that ended the Second Lebanon War in the summer of 2006.
Resolution 1701 calls for the disarming of all militias in Lebanon, including Hezbollah, and bans the transfer of weapons to armed groups. The resolution also calls for Lebanon and Israel to work toward a permanent solution to end the conflict between the two countries.
The last report, issued in March by Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon, included Israeli assessments that Hezbollah has accrued 20,000 short-range and 10,000 long-range rockets since the August 2006 cease-fire.
In the March report, Ban noted repeated threats by Hezbollah spiritual leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah of "open war against Israel."
Ban wrote that "the persistent deterioration of the political climate and the prolonged [Lebanese presidential elections] deadlock," which has yet to be resolved, have prevented addressing the disarmament of Hezbollah and other armed militias.
Ban's earlier report at the end of October acknowledged Iranian weapons transfer, aided by Syria, across its border with Lebanon. Syria continues to deny its part in the rearmament of Hezbollah.
