CBNNews.com - RAMALLAH, West Bank - Hamas officials called on their Palestinian Authority (PA ) counterparts to cancel a dance festival to be held this week in PA-controlled city of Ramallah.
Sponsored by Sareyyet Ramallah, the third annual Contemporary Dance Festival features international and local dance troupes in what the organizers hope will broaden the local population's exposure to contemporary dance.
Participants include troupes from Italy, Serbia and Finland. The Trondheim Jazz Orchestra from Norway, a leading Jazz ensemble, will open the festival.
But Hamas officials urged Palestinians to shun the "disgraceful" event.
"This event is an insult to all Muslims," said Hamas Deputy Minister of Waqf [Islamic Trust] Affairs Saleh al-Raqab.
"Those who are dancing on the pain and wounds of the Palestinian people can't be part of our people," al-Raqab said. "How can they be dancing while our people in the Gaza Strip are suffering under the siege? Is this the way to liberate Palestine?" he asked.
