CBNNews.com - JORDAN VALLEY, Israel - The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has beefed up security for Israeli farmers in the Jordan Valley working near the border with Jordan.
Increasing threats against Israelis from al-Qaeda and other Islamic jihadist groups pose a real threat to area farmers whose fields are on the other side of the security barrier and visible from the Jordan Valley Highway.
The farmers have been instructed to tell the IDF when they're in those fields so the military can keep track of them.
"This is a real threat," one senior IDF officer said. "It is no secret that al-Qaeda is converging on our borders and the kidnapping of a farmer or a soldier would be a major success [for them]," he said.
While the presence of regional al-Qaeda cells isn't new, Israeli defense officials note they're increasingly active in Jordan, Egypt and Lebanon.
According to Jordan Valley Regional Council head Dubi Tal, the farmers are aware of their vulnerability to kidnapping attempts by Islamic terrorists.
"It is in the air, but there is nothing new," Tal said. "We have gotten used to it," he said.
