Church of England Panel Calls for Decision on Women as Bishops

April 29, 2008
LONDON - A Church of England commission says it's time the church made up its mind about how it will deal with female bishops and Anglicans who object to them.
The church's governing body has voted in principle to let women become bishops, but has not yet officially lifted the barrier.
Since 1994, the Church of England has ordained women as priests, but has barred them from becoming bishops. It has provided so-called "flying bishops" to minister to parishes that refuse to accept women as priests or to deal with bishops who ordain women.
