State Senate Votes to Let Teachers Supplement Science Texts

BATON ROUGE, La. - Louisiana's state Senate has unanimously passed a bill that would let science teachers change the way they teach evolution, global warming and other topics in public school classrooms -- a bill that critics said could mix religion and science.

The measure, which will now be considered by the Louisiana House, would allow school boards to let their teachers supplement school science textbooks with other materials.

Opponents have said the bill was a bid to promote creationism and to challenge scientific facts with religious beliefs. But no one spoke against the proposal on the Senate floor.
