GALLUP, N.M. - The Roman Catholic bishop of Gallup, New Mexico, has resigned.

The Vatican says Pope Benedict accepted the resignation of Bishop Donald Pelotte, who has been on medical leave recovering from brain injuries suffered in an apparent fall at his home.

Pelotte, who was ordained in 1972, became the church's first American Indian bishop in 1990.

Despite speculation that Pelotte might have been assaulted in his home last year, he and diocese officials have said he was injured when he fell down the stairs.

Phoenix Bishop Thomas Olmsted is to continue running the Diocese of Gallup until Pelotte's successor is appointed and installed.
