Judge Approves Settlement for Clergy Abuse Victims

DES MOINES, Iowa - A bankruptcy judge has approved a plan that allows the Roman Catholic Diocese of Davenport, Iowa, to pay 37 million dollars to more than 150 people who say they were molested by priests.
Judge Lee Jackwig, who approved the reorganization plan, required that the diocese issue annual reports for the next three years showing efforts to prevent future abuse. The diocese will be required to issue apology letters from Bishop Martin Amos and an online listing of all abusers.
The diocese filed for bankruptcy in October 2006, saying it did not have the money to settle the claims stemming from its decades-long clergy sexual abuse scandal. Davenport is one of six dioceses in the United States to file for bankruptcy due to sexual abuse scandals.
