Public Schools Agree to Allow Religious Expression in Art

MADISON, Wis. - A public school district in Wisconsin has agreed to allow religious expression in student artwork to settle a lawsuit.
The Alliance Defense Fund sued the Tomah School District in March. The Christian advocacy group alleges that a Tomah High School art teacher gave a student a zero on a drawing because the boy included a cross and the phrase "John 3:16 A sign of love" in the picture.
The teacher showed the boy a policy prohibiting violence, blood, sex and religious beliefs in artwork.
The lawsuit claims school officials allowed other religious items and artwork to be displayed.
ADF attorney David Cortman says the district has agreed to allow religious expression and the case should be formally settled within days.
